About PDF Password Remover
This tool removes password protection from PDF files entirely in your browser using the open-source pdf-lib JavaScript library. Your file is never uploaded to any server all processing happens locally on your device.
Two types of PDF passwords
PDF files support two distinct types of passwords:
- Owner password (permissions password): Restricts actions like printing, copying, or editing. The PDF can still be opened without a password. This tool removes owner passwords automatically no password entry required.
- User password (open password): Prevents the PDF from being opened at all. To remove this type of password, you must know the correct password. Enter it in the field above and the tool will decrypt and re-save the PDF without any password.
Client-side vs. server-based PDF unlocking
| Factor | NexaTools (client-side) | Server-based tools |
|---|---|---|
| Document privacy | Files never leave your device | PDF uploaded to external servers |
| Confidential content risk | Zero no transmission occurs | Server may log or retain files |
| File size limits | Only your device RAM | Typically 1050 MB on free plans |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this tool unlock a PDF if I do not know the open password? ▼
No. If a document is protected with an open (user) password that blocks viewing the content, you must supply the correct password once; the tool will then strip the encryption so you won't need to enter it again.
How does the tool handle PDFs restricted by owner permissions (like print or copy restrictions)? ▼
PDFs that only enforce owner or permissions restrictions (such as disabled printing, copying, or editing) unlock automatically without requiring any password input.
Is it safe to type my confidential PDF password into this web tool? ▼
Yes. The decryption process takes place entirely in client-side JavaScript on your local computer. Neither your password nor your document is ever sent over the network.
Does removing the password modify the text or layout of my document? ▼
No. Unlocking the PDF preserves all text streams, vector graphics, high-resolution images, bookmarks, and embedded forms exactly as they were originally formatted.
What kind of output file is generated after password removal? ▼
The tool outputs a standard, unencrypted PDF file that can be opened, printed, and edited in any standard PDF reader without password prompts.
