Enterprise networks block the Microsoft Store. Air-gapped environments can't reach it. And sometimes, wsreset.exe just fails to fix a corrupted local cache. When you need a .appx or .msixbundle installer file for a Windows application, relying on the native Store application is often a dead end.
You need the raw installer files.
Microsoft hosts these installers on their own Content Delivery Network (CDN). The challenge is generating the time-limited, signed URLs required to download them.
Here is exactly how to extract those URLs and download offline installers for any free Microsoft Store application.
The Solution: Microsoft Store Link Generator§
We built the Microsoft Store Link Generator to handle the underlying API handshakes. It queries the Microsoft Store endpoints, retrieves the manifest for your requested app, and extracts the direct .appx, .msixbundle, or .eappx download links straight from tlu.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com.
All processing happens securely. It bypasses the Store app UI entirely.
Step-by-Step Extraction§
- Locate the App URL or Product ID: Go to the web version of the Microsoft Store (apps.microsoft.com). Search for the app you need (e.g., WhatsApp, Windows Terminal, or Ubuntu). Copy the URL. It will look like this:
https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NKSQGP7F2NH. - Input the Link: Paste that URL into the Microsoft Store Link Generator.
- Select the Channel: Leave the channel set to
Retailunless you specifically need an Insider build (Release Preview, Fast, or Slow rings). - Generate Links: Click the generate button. The tool queries Microsoft's API and returns a list of files.
- Download the Installer: Look for the file ending in
.msixbundleor.appxwith the largest file size—this is usually the main application package. Ignore the.blockmapfiles. Right-click the link and select "Save link as...".
Installing the Offline Package§
Once you have the .msixbundle or .appx file downloaded, you can install it using PowerShell. This is required for deployment via MDT, SCCM, Intune, or manual installation on an air-gapped machine.
Open an elevated PowerShell prompt (Run as Administrator) and execute the Add-AppxPackage cmdlet:
Add-AppxPackage -Path "C:\Path\To\Your\DownloadedApp.msixbundle"
If the installation fails with a dependency error (e.g., missing VCLibs or .NET Framework components), return to the Link Generator. The generated list includes all dependency packages required by the main app. Download those .appx files and install them first using the exact same PowerShell command.
Limitations§
- Paid Apps: This method only works for free applications or applications you have already purchased and bound to a Microsoft account that you can authenticate with. It will not bypass licensing or DRM for paid software.
- Link Expiration: The CDN links generated are time-sensitive. They typically expire within hours. Do not hardcode these URLs into deployment scripts; download the files locally and host them on your own internal share.
Stop wrestling with Store caches and firewall rules. Grab the direct CDN links, download the packages, and deploy on your own terms.
